I love photographing families.  Not only do I get to make pictures, but I also get to observe very small, intimate family interactions that warm up my heart.  For example, while setting up the first photo of the slideshow above, I originally had Sophia, the little girl in a pink dress, with her older sisters on the grass.  It seemed a bit crowded, so I asked Sophia to stand next to her dad instead.  As Sophia reached down to hold her dad’s hand, his stoic face instantly became incandescent!  No verbal directions from me would have softened Brian as simply having Sophia near him.  This picture looks complete to me.

It’s hard to imagine this family portrait without one of them, but a few years ago, the Boyer family almost lost Sophia due to a genetic condition known as Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1), which causes serious liver/lung disease in infants, children, and adults.  Thankfully, Sophia received the gift of life in December of 2006, and she’s eagerly awaiting her 7th birthday celebration in the fall.
